Hello and welcome back with us today here on Garden The Easy Way, this is Ken and Marilou.
Today we would like to talk about one of the best well known onion, the name of the onion is Red Globe. It is a widely adaptable onion that is as colorful as it is delicious. Great for soups, salads, sandwiches, cheeseburgers, use in a restaurant all over the USA. The medium large bulbs have deep red skin and medium pungency. Ideal for salsas.
Onion is easy to grow, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind, you can buy onion bulbs and set them out in your garden or you can buy onion seeds. If you choose to plant seeds, you will need to start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before planting outdoors. When transplanting, clip plants to 3 inches and plant 2 inches deep. Or, sow directly in garden when ground can be worked, placing 2-3 seeds per inch.
Thin to 3 inches apart when plants are 6 inches tall. Harvest by pulling bulbs when tops are brown and dry.
Days to Germination: 10-12 days
Days to Harvest: 110 days
Planting Depth: 1/2 inch
Spacing: Row/Plant 18 in./3 in.
Preserve By: Storage & Canning
SUGGESTIONS: Fertile, moist soil enriched with compost is best for onion production. Onions ward off many insect pests around lettuce, cabbage and carrots. Use thinnings as green onions.
Well that's it for today, we hope to talk here again tomorrow on Garden The Easy Way. Until then, this is Ken & Marilou wishing you all Happy Gardening Always.
